I think he was commenting on the inappropriateness of using "gay" as an insult..and poking fun at homophobia..not homosexuals..

let alone flash a quick salesperson-like smile, he will think to himself "she wants me" ....
trail her around the store, filling his little carry basket with useless items until he finds the
