Highway becomes runway: Aircraft makes emergency landing on New Jersey Turnpike

The plane, a single-engine Cessna, made an emergency landing on the turnpike's northbound lane about two miles south of Interchange 4 in Cherry Hill about 6:45 a.m., police said.

No one was hurt, but the incident backed up traffic for several miles, police said.

Traffic reporter Mike Lanford was providing traffic reports for Philadelphia's KYW-AM and KYW-TV, officials said. The pilot, reportedly hired by Metro Networks, was not immediately identified.

The landing, described as precautionary, was necessary because of a low oil pressure indicator, said federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Arlene Salac. She said FAA inspectors are investigating.

Plane owner Out of the Blue Inc., of Wilmington, Del., did not immediately return a message Monday.

A truck was brought in to get the plane off the highway.
