| Gulf spill may be worse than thought Executive: Well could be spewing out 5,000 barrels a dayAssociated Press April 28, 2010Much more oil may be leaking from a Gulf of Mexico drilling site than first estimated, BP's Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles said on Thursday. The leak is more than the 1,000 barrels of day that was originally estimated last week after a deepwater rig exploded and burned off the coast of Louisiana, Suttles told NBC's TODAY show. It may be as much as a new estimate of 5,000 barrels a day that the government first provided late Wednesday, he said. "I would say there is little threat to the environment because it won't coat an animal, and because all the volatiles have been consumed if it gets on a shore it can be simply picked up," he said. [Greg Pollock] The decision to burn some of the oil came after crews operating submersible robots failed to activate a shut-off device that would halt the flow of oil on the sea bottom 5,000 feet below. Greg Pollock, head of the oil spill division of the Texas General Land Office, which is providing equipment for crews in the Gulf, said he is not aware of a similar burn ever being done off the U.S. coast. The last time crews with his agency used fire booms to burn oil was a 1995 spill on the San Jacinto River. Link to source | |

| Now if the oil is escaping from the sea floor isn't it cold enough at that depth for the oil to congeal into one mass and settle on the sea floor? Kinda like magma that cools and becomes rock? | |

probably not because oil in it's natural state isn't a solid

| Seems like by now they would have come up with something to suck it up and seperate the water and oil. It's not like the first or last time this will happen. And why didn't they get a ring around it before it spread? | |

I am so behind on current events right now Now the plan is to drill a new pipe next to the leak to relieve the pressure ..so they can cap the leak... that would take about 3 months... too late by then to save the gulf coast...will loose lots of wildlife... too bad they can't change the wind direction... also too bad we're soooo hungry for oil...

| This is a tragedy of epic proportions no matter who gets blamed. There will be at least a little bit of oil washing up on beaches all over the world. We already have tiny specks of black oil on some beaches hundreds of miles away from any deep sea oil operations. | |

All true, and human nature being what it is little will ever change despite the "green" movement. Humans will use and abuse the planet until some day it wont support life anymore and will become just another lifeless sphere orbiting the sun. Not a very pleasant thought but thats the way it is.

| I agree some what. We will be using petroleum for the forseeable future. "Green" technology is nice but it is not at a point that it contributes significantly to our needs. I don't know how long it will be until it does make a difference, but it will be awhile. If the oil leak was in the middle of the ocean and not near land it wouldn't be such a problem. Once the oil gets to land it becomes a disaster. | |

the real problem is the devastation to sea life. it creates a huge dead zone. it will take years for that area to recover
