Dear Cloud 9 crew,

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Was that discrimination? Do you think I have a good case?

Discrimination? I really don't think so. But I was at a place tonight and had supper and she added the tip herself. She cost ger sef and extra buck that I would have given her. I should have thanked her.

I thought that only applied to parties of 6 or more

if that's a new trend, I wouldn't go for it...as a patron or a server... like you said, she cheated herself

Some places do add a tip for large groups but there was just 4 of us so I thought it was odd. But again it cost them in the end.

they never notice I eat all the fries

Don't go there a lot but got a surprise this evening. They charged me twice when I went there for Thanksgiving. But oddly this time they didn't add the tip. Just doubed the bill and the tip. It wil be fixed tomorrow.

The gratuity was mandatory for large parties, but what if the service stinks?

Bizarre story of the week: Two restaurant patrons were arrested on a charge of theft when
they refused to pay a $16 mandatory tip that was part of their bill.


College student Leslie Pope told a TV reporter that the service was so bad at the Bethlehem, Pa.,
establishment that she had to get the table’s silverware and napkins and walk to the bar to refill her soda.
An hour after the group of eight ordered chicken fingers and other bar grub, the food arrived.

After the $73 bill came, the group paid for food, drinks, and tax but refused to pay the tip.
After explaining the bad service to the bartender in charge, Pope claimed he took their money and called police.
The couple was handcuffed and placed in the back of a police car.

If it's a mandatory charge then it isn't a tip. I'd say it's kind of like deceptive practice to call a mandatory charge a tip.
