Honest highway workers find money


GREENFIELD, Ind. (WISH) -
Three Indiana State Highway workers are being commended for their honesty.
The employees found $100,000 along the side of the highway in Mount Comfort.

The crew leader says without hesitation, he called the Indiana State Police.

All agree, keeping the money would have been wrong.

"That could cause so much headache and problem and say oh, if I keep this, what's going to happen.
Something is going to happen and I don't want to lose my job," the crew leader said.

Investigators need to wait until the money actually thaws out before they can count it but the
actual amount could be way beyond $100,000.

All three say they've received mixed reactions to their actions, "Just people telling us how stupid we are."

INDOT officials are deciding what kind of reward the employees will get,
but for now, they've just received pats on the back.

why would they think they would lose their jobs for not turning it in?
can you lose a job for something like that?

I dunno... maybe... ??? Seems to me that their find was complicated because there were three of them who found it... even if they could agree to split it and keep quiet about it, each of them would still have to trust the other two to keep quiet about it... an extra $33,000 would not be that easy for a roadside cleanup person to keep quiet about or explain away.

If I found it I'm not sure i would tell anyone. The owner sure isn't going to come forward.

i'd keep it quiet. probably sit on it for awhile to see what happened
